Groton Long Point (GLP) is located within the town of Groton, on Fishers Island Sound, in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The year-round population was 518 at the 2010 census.
The Groton Long Point area is governed by the Groton Long Point Association (GLPA), a private association established by a Special Act of the Connecticut Legislature in 1921. This act serves as the GLPA's charter, granting it the authority to tax residents and issue bonds to provide services independently from the town of Groton. Historically, these municipal corporations were created to offer services that the larger township could not or chose not to provide. Under the provisions of this act, the GLPA holds the same governmental powers as a borough. Although the area is classified by the U.S. Census Bureau as a borough, it is not officially incorporated as one. Today, Connecticut residents can establish special taxing districts like this independently, without requiring a special legislative act.
